There were alot of Gieses coming across in the late 1800's and early 1900's. My William Frederick Giese came we believe southern Germany, near France. He was fluent in both French and German. Also he played the violin and organ. It is said that he was also a cabinet maker for the Kaiser in Germany but have no proof. He came over about 1885 and married a Meta Selma Petznick. Grandmother’s notes suggest surname: “Plotznick,” but everywhere else she’s known as Petznick. Census records indicate Meta arrived in 1883, 1891, 1885 (1910, 1920, 1930). Ancestry passenger list has a Meta Petznick arriving via Netherlands and Ireland in New York on 10 May 1886 - which conflicts with Hilda’s date of birth. Meta was supposed to have met husband in US. Birth too close to arrival date.
